Study 2: Follow

Pray

Ask God to show you how he is leading you today

Review

Take ten minutes to review how you got on with the actions you commited to in the previous study. Think about the following questions:

  • Did I do what I committed to doing?
  • How did it go?
  • Do I need to change anything?
  • Do I need to keep doing anything?

Read

Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him.

Matthew 4: 19-20 (NLT)

Reflect

  • What does this verse tell me about Jesus?
  • What does this verse tell me about myself?

We live in a social media age, where followers are the people who like the posts or pictures that we publish on our feeds. When Jesus called his disciples to follow him, he meant physically. They actually stepped away from the fishing nets which provided their livelihood and went village to village with him.

In the book “The Cross and the Switchblade” David Wilkerson tells how the decision to sell his television and use the time he spent watching it in prayer catapulted him into his ministry with the street gangs of New York.

Practice: Self-sacrifice

  • Stopping or reducing activities (that may not be bad in themselves) in order to make time for God
  • Actively seeking God to find out where he is leading

Action

Reflecting on the practice and the questions below write down at least one thing you will do (or stop doing) this week

  • What is Jesus asking you to leave behind today?
  • What would it look like for you to follow him this week?

Share

If you are doing this in a group share your action statements and pray for each other. If you are doing this on your own we strongly recomend you share with at least one other person
