Study 12: Baptism

Pray

Ask God to bring people to faith and to baptism

Review

Take ten minutes to review how you are getting on with the actions you have commited to so far. Think about the following question:

  • Am I doing what I committed to doing?
  • How is it going?
  • Where am I seeing fruit?
  • Are there people I need to be challenging to take the next step?

Read

Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptising and making more disciples than John (though Jesus himself didn’t baptise them—his disciples did)

John 4: 1-2 (NLT)

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit”

Matthew 28: 18-19 (NLT)

Reflect

  • What does this verse tell me about Jesus?
  • What does this verse tell me about myself?

Immediately baptising those who came to repent was central to the ministry of John the Baptist - and John's gospel tells us that Jesus' disciples where baptising even more. Baptism is also central to Jesus' final command to his disciples.

How does this relate to the way that churches practice baptism today?

Practice: Baptism

  • Baptising people as soon as they profess faith
  • Seeing baptism as an essential step in discipleship

Action

Reflecting on the practice and the questions below write down at least one thing you will do (or stop doing) this week

  • How do we bring people to the point of baptism?
  • Who should be doing the baptising?

Share

If you are doing this in a group share your action statements and pray for each other. If you are doing this on your own we strongly recomend you share with at least one other person
